The major additional capabilities of the 8901B are its improved power-meter accuracy, its ability to make adjacent-channel power measurements or carrier-noise measurements (with Options 030 through 037), and its ability to count audio frequencies and measure distortion on 400 Hz and 1 kHz signals.

The unit displays the I and Q either on a vector diagram or versus time. It also analyzes the the analog I and Q signals, but because it contains a built in demodulator it can also take the IF signal and the coherent reference inputs. The 8981A contains internal 35 MHz baseband I and Q filters.
